The Layer is hosted on a scalable, cloud-based infrastructure. Our storage infrastructure is geo-redundant and backed up for your peace of mind. Our architecture design ensures that the latest security protocols are adhered to. Rest assured, we invest heavily in our infrastructure and DR, to ensure that access to our software is maintained and that your data is safe. We adhere to strict test and release schedules, and data-flow is closely monitored, all the way from our back-end service agents through to our client-facing portal.
With thousands of customisation points, you can be sure that you will be able to tweak The Layer to work perfectly for your organisation. Full visibility and audit trails ensure that system activity can be closely monitored for compliance purposes.
Customers decide who gets access to their instance of The Layer. You can decide which information to expose to certain roles within the business. Don’t want new business sales to see customers? Then restrict access. Don’t want sales to see each other’s records? You can restrict access. You can choose what to restrict to whom. Track all user activity through our audit trail feature. Here you can find information on who has accessed the record and the activity they have completed.
Data is transferred between you and the The Layer service using the same AES 256-bit encryption used by financial institutions. Not only that but your data is also encrypted while stored in our datacentres. Our application is inherently secure due to the numerous layers of security applied during the development. We’ve thought of all external and internal threats and have taken all possible steps to mitigate them. Finally, we proactively monitor any threats to our application in order to take evasive action.
Our service is highly scalable to ensure the system can grow with your business. Depending on your requirements, any approved user can access the Layer from anywhere with an internet connection. We’ve taken away the stress, time and cost of managing your own server infrastructure. We manage the difficult stuff so that you don’t have to.

Layer Systems operates both centrally managed and customer-configured backup options, summaries of which are provided below.
Centrally Managed Backup
Configured in weekly full, daily differential & 4-hourly log shipping configuration, and a 104-day retention period per our internal RPO. Managed by Layer Systems, our core system backups are regularly tested, in line with our RTO for data recovery.
Additional recovery options are available on full backups at additional cost, including record recovery, data integrity checking and queries.
This backup type is not recommended for full ‘point in time recovery’ and the Customer Configured Backup option should be used to take snapshots of data at a point in time.
RPO: 4 hours, RTO: 8 hours
Customer Configured Backup
This tool, available for customer configuration, provides optional data export to AWS instances, enabling the end-user to restore data from their external cloud service to a new or existing Layer account.
Typically, customers use this for their backup & compliance purposes.
RPO: Customer Defined, RTO: Customer Controlled
We measure the following metrics to form our overall SLA.
• General service availability – This stands at 99.95% for 2021, with similar performance in previous years. In-house engineering teams monitor performance closely.
• Satisfied requests – The percentage of requests served up within tolerance, benchmarked against similar products using Apdex. This has been >90% for three years running.
• Response & load times – We have performance engineering resource monitoring this.
Service availability is transparent and available via our Status Page. Users can subscribed to receive updates on service issues or planned maintenance. We do not offer SLA credits by default.
We impose a fair use limit on storage space, which currently stands at 100GB per tenant. We do not have any tenants using more than this.
Our request limit for app is 1,000 requests per minute per user account, which has never been breached.
Our request limit for API is dependent on your service plan, and varies by endpoint to ensure service availability.
We run on a variety of cloud services, including AWS & Azure. We use a wealth of technical solutions, from SQL Server clusters to REDIS in-memory storage. Ask our technical team for more information.
Your data is securely stored in datacentres in Europe, and backed up in accordance with our RPO/RTOs.
